Written by Administrator
Monday, 30 April 2012 16:16

FYI – This motion/resolution was adopted by the Vietnam Veterans of America, California State Council at their quarterly meeting in Fresno on April 29, 2012.  The whereas clauses briefly explain why this was done.

Pete Conaty

Motion:

Whereas the California State General fund is currently projected to have an $11 billion deficit for the foreseeable future, and

Whereas California has historically not funded veterans homes and programs at a rate necessary to care for its 2 million veterans, and

Whereas California is home to more Iraq and Afghanistan veterans than any other state, and

Whereas with the drawdown of U.S. military forces from Iraq and Afghanistan, and with the proposed reduction in the size of the U.S. military could result in up to 100,000 new veterans returning to California,

Therefore be it resolved that the California State Council, Vietnam Veterans of America will support legislative and ballot initiative proposals to increase taxes (on a case by case basis) which shall provide for increased funding for veterans programs and veterans homes.

Don’t Lose Your Tax Exempt Status

Many MOAA councils and chapters have a 501(c)(19) or 501(c)(3) IRS tax-exempt status as recommended in MOAA’s Council and Chapters Policies and Procedures Guide. Recently, the IRS cracked down on charitable organizations that had not filed the required Form 990-N (e-Postcard) or an annual return such as Form 990, Form 990-EZ, or Form 990-PF for three consecutive years. Several chapters were notified they had lost their tax exempt status. Learn more, including how to reactivate your tax status, in the September 2011 issue of The Affiliate.
